Let&´s face it: nothing cheers the soul more than a smoking pizza, topped with two basil leaves, mozzarella and the "pummarola" (tomato) that binds everything together. Beautiful, round, cut into slices by the maestro himself alongside his wood-burning oven: pizza represents an essential dish for the many tourists who in Chiavenna seek contact with local gastronomic tradition, but also appreciate the chance to enjoy a very Italian pizza, eaten leisurely, even better if seated at one of the centre&´s restaurant tables, outdoors. L&´Arca restaurant, situated in the historic centre of Chiavenna, in the via Paolo Bossi is a veritable reference point for the high quality of the cuisine and its ambience. The place is superbly maintained with welcoming and attentive staff, and has outdoor tables in a rather seductive courtyard. One of the oldest in the town, in addition to traditional pizza, the restaurant - overseen by Simone, Emmanuele and Massimo - offers a vast range of gourmet pizza with choice ingredients and a presentation which smacks of sophistication. It&´s an alternative way of appreciating the Neapolitan dish combined with ingredients of the very highest order that flaunt its versatility. L&´Arca is in pole position even among the most refined palates.
But the historic restaurant is also much appreciated for a cuisine which incorporates fish dishes and some excellent traditional local fare. Essentially there are two menus: the regular and one with seasonal dishes. The context breathes elegance, and seats 90, rather more in summer with the two small terraces. And there&´s a very tempting wine cellar to explore! A tip: it&´s advisable to book rather than be disappointed.
