A cultural treasure trove

Ecomuseums represent a network of places, people and shared experiences in which the participation of the local populace is crucial. They are all about identity, values and future generations. Group and individual memories are explored, telling of origins and evolution over many years: a vital collective to be cherished.

That of Vallespluga was established in 2011, recognised by the Lombardy region in 2014, is based at MUVIS in Campodolcino, and incorporates the entire Valle Spluga by recording an Alpine culture with all its historical and social perspectives. One of its main aims is to hold on to the customs of life and work of the local population, to revisit cultural traditions but then see them within a modern context and to demonstrate a shared and sustainable social development within the valley. Visitors to www.ecomuseovallespluga.it will find a range of itineraries of interest incorporating naturalistic, historic, cultural, ethnographic and religious themes.

The “via delle cascate” traces the old road created by the Austrians. The route follows the Liro torrent taking in the waterfalls at Starleggia and Pianazzo as far as Isola. On the return trip to Madesimo it hugs the Scalcoggia stream and passes additional waterfalls at Catino and Groppera.

The historic Via Spluga itself heads up from Isola to Montespluga through the magnificent, dizzying Cardinello gorge, one of the most striking sections which then skirts along the lakeside to the village with its 19th C customs, buildings and chapel, and then onwards up to the Pass.
