A scent of springtime

The snow makes way for the emerging cornucopia of colours. Water cascades anew at the waterfall at “gushing” Groppera. Meadows pose proudly in bloom, the very first crocus in the valley bottom can’t fail to take the eye whilst accompanying aromas herald the end of winter and the arrival of Nature’s most prolific of seasons.

Madesimo and the arc of custodian-style mountains has seen it all before. But it never fails to take the breath away. It did not go unnoticed either through the eyes and works of renowned poet Giosuè Carducci who in his poem “Sant’Abbondio” talks of limpid, diamond-strewn skies and sparkling snow capped Alpine peaks.

A wander in Springtime might well commence from Madesimo’s centre, where the Carducciano itinerary sets out: a popular meander taking in some of the favoured places of the poet himself and which will also afford the chance to appreciate the monument dedicated to him; then across the Groppera bridge or hugging the Scalcoggia torrent – christened in the afore-mentioned poem, the “Madesimo Cascante”. Springtime serves up a whole host of opportunities for lovers of the open wair; rucksacks primed for healthy appetites on even the gentlest of outings awaiting all the family. The Valcava Alpine garden throws up “all the fun of the flora” for lovers of all things botanical, with a plethora of flowers and plants to identify, all native to high altitudes. It’s accessible by car, but it’s better still on foot in around 40 minutes from Madesimo – or perhaps from Andossi in around just 15.

The Alpine garden is divided into ten different environments which comprehensively represent the rich biodiversity of the area. For information on all itineraries or more general information head for the website of the Consorzio Turistico di Madesimo (www.madesimo.eu).
