Here’s a place where the history of the territory is inextricably linked with its emblematic product: the chestnut. A project which was the brainchild of the Consorzio Forestale di Prata Camportaccio, has succeeded in recent years in showcasing the value of its local fruit resource. Since 2002 more than 200 resident chestnut trees have been appropriately rescued by a process of cutting back and grafting anew, alongside regular maintenance within the chestnut woodland covering more than ten hectares. These well-considered enterprises have resulted in the creation of a “chestnut trail”, a gentle, circuitous route through the woods, taking in ancient hamlets and traditional grèe - the outbuildings in which the chestnuts would

historically be smoked. Illustrated and informative notice boards along the route explain the key stages in the chestnut life-cycle. It’s an extremely enjoyable outing involving around a couple of hours. On the final Sunday of October – the 29th this year – the customary celebration “Chestnut Day” will be staged at Stova - Orlo di Prata, which along with educational visits organised for schools and groups, aims to promote the territory, its naturalistic significance and impressive landscapes as well as rediscovering and celebrating the traditions, history and culture of the local communities.
It’s a fine opportunity for everyone – young and old alike – to get to know at first hand the infinite possibilities that this Alpine fruit throws up, once an absolutely vital part of the local diet in all its culinary glory.
