Biking in and around Verceia

One of the most attractive and appreciated stretches of the network of bicycle
paths which connect pretty much the whole of Valchiavenna is that which goes through Verceia, and it really is rather special. The route develops for the most part along the old Statale 36 dello Spluga over bridges and along pathways, through to the new underpass which takes you to the Natural Reserve of Pian di Spagna. Our particular trip begins at Campo Mezzola, a small hamlet forming part of nearby Novate. Head off by skirting the asphalt stretch of the old Statale until it meets up with the deviation at Verceia railway station. The track here has been established by excavating into the rocky slope on one side. But what strikes you particularly in this first stretch is the absolute calmness of the lake’s waters below. A combination of the mild yet humid climate has encouraged a proliferation of lush vegetation amongst which fig trees are to feature prominently all along the way. Having reached the first houses of the village, the track moves to the right, before the station, and we can admire the attractive small houses with their landing points and gardens as we pass. We move smoothly along to the well-tended little port offering a safe haven for visiting boats.

The route is on the level almost the whole of the way and in no time at all we reach the crossing of the Chiavenna-Colico line where, situated slightly raised up is the entrance to the fortification of the Linea-Cadorna excavated during the First World War and which will open to the public in 2011.

In Autumn this special corner of Valchiavena abounds in colour and spectacular displays along what is quite simply a most enjoyable outing.
