FOPPE: A MOUNTAIN IN BLOOM

You won’t be disappointed. So many and varied are the delights of the Valle Spluga. Captivating natural beauty flanked by very particular rchitectural features of ancient village, mule-track and magical cobblestone pathway. History and heritage enveloped within a priceless cultural environment. Just an hour’s walk from Fraciscio, the hamlet forming part of Campodolcino, someone has conjured up a dream come true: l’alpe delle Foppe. Set out on foot from the car park at Fraciscio’s cemetery, or if you prefer from Motta and make the gentle traverse in just 30 mins.
There’s a convenient cycle path with its bold twists and turns, winding through magnificent fir and larch forest. Foppe’s meadows are well manicured, host a well-ordered vegetable plot and a cornucopia of colour is provided by native flowers bedecking splendidly-restored mountain dwellings. In the air an engaging aroma of burning wood mixes with the scent of hay under a summer sun, the infectious laughter of a child, the thud of axe on logs, all contributing to evoke the delight of the calming and gentle rhythms of a bygone age. A halt is a must.
