TWELVE PATHS UNITED BY A COMMON PURPOSE: TO APPRECIATE AN ANCIENT PATHWAY. A LEISURELY JOURNEY DISCOVERING AUTHENTIC PLACES LOCATED ALONG OR NEAR THE SENTIERO DEL VIANDANTE AND THE VIA SPLUGA.
The Sentiero del Viandante and the ViaSpluga, two paths whose fame is guaranteed thanks to the undisputed beauty of the surrounding landscape. But there&´s so much more. Special places containing the historical and collective memory of a territory that over the centuries has played a decisive role in links between northern and southern Europe. At the outset of the Sentiero del Viandante, in Lecco, you can see the remains of the fortified village, later to become the town. There is much evidence left by the Visconti, the Spaniards, Austrians not to mention a host of celebrated parties, including Alessandro Manzoni. To learn more about the writer and his novel "The Betrothed" simply immerse yourself in the streets of Lecco and follow the Manzoni route. Heading along the path towards the Upper Western Lakeside there are any number of little gems. The atmospheric Villa Monastero at Varenna is a fine example, an ancient female monastery, and nearby the Vezio Castle, a military vanguard which today is a falconry centre. Further north history continues to feature: the Fort of Fuentes and the church of San Fedelino. After crossing the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Natural Reserve, along the Via Francisca, you reach Chiavenna. The Via Spluga leaves from Chiavenna, an itinerary dating back to the pre-Roman era and develops along mule tracks that remain wellpreserved even today. It moves across Campodolcino and Isola, resting places offering shelter to travellers from far afield, before reaching Montespluga, then as far as Thusis in Switzerland.
