Lake Mezzola is becoming more popular than ever with visitors; which should come as no great surprise as it hosts enchanting beaches and a tranquility surrounded by greenery. The lake itself has a deep green hue and sparkles under the hot summer sun. Situated just to the north of Lake Como, with mountains on every side and dense woodland in parts, it boasts charming villages and beauty spots along its shores. There&´s an almost Mediterranean ambience to Valchiavenna here - accentuated by the mild climate. It&´s a perfect spot to take a dip in the cool waters or to simply relax on the grass or beach on a sunny day. But there&´s much more to the lake than simply relaxation and bathing. There are endless opportunities to practise a range of sports: kayaking, canoeing, SUP and rowing are all at hand. And all forms of boat and paddle boards are ever-popular with tourists who enjoy their leisure hours exploring the lake or simply being lulled by the silence or gentle rhythm of the waves. Hiring a boat for an afternoon and skirting the rocky shores of the lake amidst a nature pure and uncontaminated, or heading northwards to the mouth of the river Mera are both attractive propositions. Or dock by the irresistible San Fedelino temple, the oldest testimony to the Romanesque period in Lombardy, accessible only via the lake. Lots of options.
Lake Mezzola just has to be one of the most seductive places to visit in the valley. Its shores are sprinkled with restaurants, bars and kiosks where you can have a snack or lunch in a relaxed environment. From Verceia to Novate there are places with outdoor tables where you can eat or simply enjoy an aperitif. Unassuming places with excellent gastronomic options whether it be a hearty meal or a decent glass of wine. Perhaps the ideal time is in the early evening, when the warm colours of the sunset begin to filter into the dying light.
