La Vecchiascuola
Introducing the new Vecchiascuola and restaurant La Terrazza overlooking our magnificent Alpine valley. Turning up in Chiavenna the visitor’s eye is immediately drawn towards the valley side above with its sprawling vineyards. And further up represented by an intimate cluster of habitations proudly sits the village of Pianazzola, a veritable sun-trap throughout the year and a magnificent viewpoint from which to appreciate the length of Valchiavenna and Valbregaglia. It takes a mere ten minutes to reach the village by car. We’re at 630m now, and Pianazzola remains the home for around 50 people or so.
Right here it’s as though time has stood still. The houses for the most part are stone-built, with piota (slate-style) roofs and the tiny alleys which run through the village are very particular and unpaved. Traffic noise is, literally, unheard of.At the bottom of the village stands a historic building constructed in the early 1900’s and used as a nursery and elementary school until 1981. The building has recently been completely restored and today has become a handsome structure which offers a bed and breakfast facility which sleeps around twenty and incorporates La Terrazza – a panoramic restaurant.
Vecchiascuola, a nod towards the building’s previous life, boasts eight rooms each with names of a variety of school subjects. Three have a small kitchenette and living area appropriate for families enjoying longer stays. It’s a unique spot, perfect for anyone looking for a warm welcome, tranquillity and an intimate rapport with Nature. Something new and a little different bringing a genuinely original feel to tourism within Valchiavenna.
