CARLO DONATI HAS A PASSION FOR NATURALISTIC NOCTURNAL PHOTOGRAPHY. HERE’S HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT.
Carlo “discovered” photography around seven years ago. During the succeeding years his images began to embrace social media as he appreciated just what a revolutionary impact this modern phenomenon has had in bringing photographic material to a potentially limitless
audience. “I was instantly captivated by landscape photography” Carlo explains, “and in particular at nighttime and the heavens”. Armed with his very first Reflex he continued to develop his talent in a bid to emulate the work of some of the serious professionals who he followed online. He was fortunate enough in that the territory in which he lives offers up a magnificent mountain backdrop where he could indulge his passion. Pitch black skies with little light pollution form key elements in his efforts to immortalize the star-studded heavens and galaxy.
“One of my very favourite places for night shots has to be Montespluga,” he enthuses “the
lake there has always fascinated me, probably because it reminds me so much of Norwegian landscapes”. Within this issue you’ll find examples of his handiwork showing both Madesimo and Montespluga in winter guise including a striking one of the Milky Way which in order for
him to capture it involved a 4.0 a.m. alarm call and temperatures which could hardly be described as amenable. “Photography can drive you to do crazy things” adds Carlo, smiling “but over time it’s certainly affected the way I observe the world, encouraging me to appreciate
even the least significant of nuances that previously passed unnoticed”.
