In recent months two leading exponents of the "gravel" industry - Giacomo Pellizzari and photographer Paolo Penni Martelli - have produced a splendid piece of reportage in Valle Spluga, alongside Giulia Guanella from the Consorzio Turistico. Head off from Chiavenna (333 m) along the Statale 36 as far as Madesimo (1.555 m). From here, the 3 gravel bikes took the municipal road leading to Alpe Motta (1.727m) which provided a stage finish of the Giro d&´Italia 2021. And that&´s the easy bit. From Motta the potential of the gravel bike really comes into play along the natural surfaces that lead to the legendary statue of the Madonna d&´Europa (2.000 m). Getting back to Madesimo (the options are via Motta or the route taking in the Rifugio Larici), the trio resumed climbing on dirt roads tackling the Andossi ridge which separates Madesimo from the Montespluga plain, and arrived at the village itself (1.901 m). And so a final invitation for the legs to manage the 3 kms of road that lead from Montespluga to the Passo dello Spluga itself (2.114 m), quite the conclusion to a magnificent day.
