What intrigues the first-time visitor to Fraciscio in winter, a small village at 1300m, just above Campodolcino, is its rather isolated nature, somewhat hidden away compared to the more classic destinations for tourists within Valle Spluga.
On the right flank of the valley as you climb up, the village is regarded as rather special by people who are looking for a mountain location which has retained a genuine and profound relationship with the surrounding terrain. Here time articulates itself rather differently for visitors in relation to days spent in the more conventional tourist destinations.
Pleasurable, albeit short, winter days in Fraciscio means enjoying the fresh open air, walking or heading off on snow racquets along trails within nature itself. The exhilarating route up to Gualdera is a fine example; a gentle climb within woodland with only the muffled sound of footsteps in deep snow for company. And for lovers of cross-country there’s a splendid 3 km circular route taking in some terrific and varied landscapes.
If you love mountain terrain at its purest, if you are prepared to leave all the modern transport systems on offer elsewhere to the ‘smart-set’ with their après-ski and fancy aperitivi, then maybe, just maybe, Fraciscio is where you might like to be.
But of course if you do happen to be a ski enthusiast it’s just a few km by car to Campodolcino where the SkyExpress funicular will plant you right at the heart of the slopes in minutes.
Fraciscio’s ideal for families with young children. Pure clean air within the tranquillity of unspoilt nature. A holiday here means enjoying life with a genuinely slower rhythm, having time to appreciate the true essence of our very being within the structure of family.
And despite being a little ‘off the beaten track’ the village has some quality accommodation and restaurants serving rather special and typical local fare.
The Fior di Roccia Residence – a recent addition – is good example – boasting modern, well-appointed apartments, for rent on a weekly or monthly basis. A quiet stay at the heart of nature is guaranteed. And the restaurant Stella Alpina is both welcoming and comfortable; built in typical mountain style its menu boasts traditional and hearty local dishes.
