With its 40 kilometres of ski slopes, Skiarea of Valchiavenna offers a wide range of descents for both experts and beginners. Whether you&´re donning skis or hopping onto a snowboard, fun is guaranteed throughout the winter and you can even get as high as the 3000 metres of Pizzo Groppera and then descend into the Val di Lei. And if you want to make life more interesting then avoid the ski lifts and make your way back up on snowshoes or mountaineering skis. Not an easy choice perhaps and one that requires a certain physical preparation and good local knowledge - but of course it&´s always possible to trust in an Alpine guide - along with all the appropriate equipment.
For an adrenaline-packed experience why not try heliskiing or speedriding - when you&´re alternating skiing and gliding when hooked to a small paraglider on your back - and for the ever bolder there&´s always snowkiting. The more laid-back can of course rely on cross country skiing: at Campodolcino and Motta there are two free-skiing routes in loop form including one of 5 km for the inexperienced. Then of course there&´s the ever-popular outings in winter time on foot: a walk can be of any distance, gentle or indeed more challenging. There&´s ample choice at Madesimo for all shapes and forms and no family member need be excluded. Along the way children can have great fun building snowmen or spotting the tracks left by local wildlife. Well worth considering too is an outing on a snowmobile, a trip at sunset perhaps taking in dinner at one of the refuges. Or an excursion on a fat bike where the only accompanying noise will be the sound of tyres whizzing along the snows. And there are those outdoor sorts who lean towards ice-climbing: but it&´s a sport best reserved for the genuine expert.
