Constant wind, a kite, a pair of skis or a board and bags of fresh snow. That’s all anyone needs to practise snow-kiting, an exhilarating discipline which for some years now has been taking the Alpine arc by storm, including the Valle Spluga region.
I began to ride the snow towed along by my kite some years ago now. Prior to that I had been practising kite-surfing on Lake Como for an age, and the move from water to snow seemed perfectly natural. Snow-kiting was the result of a fusion between kite-surfing and snowboard/skiing, and it’s a genuinely intoxicating recreation. Anyone who can ski and is familiar with kites usually takes to it in no time. How it works could not be simpler: exploiting the wind, you get towed across snow-clad surfaces. Mountainous plateaux or the slopes at the foot of mountains are the perfect places to practise this stirring discipline and personally I favour the plain at Montespluga. Allowing myself to be transported by the wind from one side of Val Loga to the other, immersed at the heart of nature is an experience that I recommend to all and sundry. Along with a group of friends – all devotees of kiting whether on the lake or indeed the snows of Valle Spluga – together we’ve opened a school to encourage everyone to share our passion.
If you feel inspired enough to have a go, abandoning yourself to the wind and nature itself, seek us out. You’ll discover Valle Spluga in a totally new perspective.
