The southern peak of Val Loga, at Montespluga is a favourite with ski excursionists and comes highly recommended because of the magnificent views within a particularly striking Alpine environment.
The peak forms a veritable ‘jewel’ in the crown which dominates the basin in which the village of Montespluga sits. Val Loga itself tiptoes off westwards all the way from the artificial lake until it gradually reaches its full commanding height. Our particular trip requires between 3 and 4 hours for the ascent and is best undertaken between November and May. The village of Montespluga (1908m) is our setting out point and we’re heading up to the southern peak (3003m) taking in the Val Loga bivouac - recently restored by Cai Valle Spluga - along the way. The route moves off towards the left slope, along the bottom of the wide natural basin. As the valley finally gives way the path swings further to the left and heads upwards to the bivouac; it sleeps 9 people, has a small gas facility and is recognised as a key base for ski excursionists. Anyone planning to take advantage of the refuge should
remember to leave an appropriate contribution which will assist Cai to maintain this valued resource. From the bivouac the route turns to the west towards the base of the ridge. Depending on the snow conditions you can decide which route to take for the ascent. The most popular is the southern peak as there is a small access channel that simplifies the climb considerably; it also makes for a reasonable descent. But there’s also a route upwards along the right flank taking in the Zocconi: it’s a little longer but worth the effort for the panoramas. At the top you will be rewarded with magnificent views overlooking the Swiss Mesolcina and in the distance note the mass of Monte Rosa, il Cervino, Bernina and il Badile. Vital equipment includes: shovel, Arva and probe. Guides, including myself, are only too happy to accompany ski enthusiasts throughout our captivating Alpine region.
