Winter in Maloja

An altitude of 1,800m guarantees the Maloja region abundant snow throughout the winter season. Anyone who craves absolute peace and tranquillity at the very heart of Nature should grab their snowshoes and head off into the wide outdoors. The route from Maloja to Cavloc, recently flagged up by Bregaglia Turismo, is an ideal tour along which to learn how to get about on snowshoes. From the “Maloja Ca d&´Maté” bus stop you head off across the plain towards Orden. Anyone can put on their snowshoes and try them for the first time away from the winter trail. Yes, it’s an odd sensation, and you have to get used to walking with your legs wider apart, taking on a somewhat dangly, swaying gait; so you’re bound to stumble every now and then, but ski poles with broad wheels will also prevent you from sinking into fresh snow and provide necessary support and balance. After reaching the Salecina Foundation (Orden), the route moves on across the bridge over the Orlegna, and two pink signs
indicate excursions on snowshoes. To the right the shorter route heads off towards the Lägh da Bitabergh. To the left the path climbs through woodland as far as the Lägh da Cavloc. Surrounded by trees, far away from the hectic hustle and bustle. Nature is asleep, submerged under the dense blanket of snow. You climb slowly, with brief halts to appreciate nature and note the tracks in the snow left by the inhabitants of the woodland. Time to reflect, to chill, so close yet so far from civilization. After the climb you reach the Lägh da Cavloc. The lake normally freezes during the month of December, and the fallen snow transforms it into a great white plain. Find a convenient place for a break, enjoy the sun and a good hot tea from your Thermos. The excursion continues into the Forno valley and ends at the plateau Plan Canin. To find an alternative route back, those who wish can take the broader path and the cross-country ski track. The descent is particularly enjoyable, the snow is  sufficiently soft to cushion our movements and almost tempts us to start doing “flips”. With snowshoes the winterworld is becoming your small and calm cocoon. This ever-so-gentle sport is easy to learn and suitable for all ages. All snow racquet outings indicated around Maloja offer up relaxing and unique experiences, far from crowded trails and totally in synch with Nature. Snowshoes and ski poles can be hired in the village sports shop “Giacometti Sport” in Maloja. Warm hiking shoes or winter boots, as well as comfortable and warm winter clothing are the basics for an enjoyable outing. Good idea to take a decent packed lunch with you though, as there are no refreshment points along the way. Not in the big, wide outdoors!
