Check out your awareness of which are the key tools to keep you safe when going off-piste on skis, snowboard or telemark.
Off-piste skiing is not straightforward, Snow conditions away from the standard piste are invariably changeable and you really need to know how to adapt your skiing to them. There are basic rules to follow. But what really makes the difference is a familiarity with the appliances that guarantee a satisfactory level of safety in extreme conditions. So how much are you really aware of your personal protection? We’ve prepared a quick test. Ready?
Never neglect Artva: The avalanche research apparatus (commonly known as ARVA or indeed more accurately as ARTVA) is an electronic device used to search out anyone caught up in an avalanche. The apparatus is activated in both transmission mode and in receptive (or search). It’s worn by anyone out and about on the snows in transmission mode. In the eventuality of someone being swept away by an avalanche, rescuers switch their equipment into reception mode to locate the transmitter of the victim. Artva should always be accommodated as close as possible to the body to avoid losing it in the event of an accident. So what about airbags?
The rucksack airbag is a contraption that can maximise personal safety in the mountains should you decide to head off-piste. We’re talking about ski-mountaineering, freeride or even excursions on ski racquets. Simply pull the appropriate lever and the airbag inflates within 3 seconds, allowing the skier to remain safely on a level surface, in the event of a mass of snow detaching and heading downhill. Shovels and probes? Standard tools which complement the “package” of appliances commonly referred to as APS. In a situation where someone is believed missing after an avalanche a shovel is essential and the probe can save precious time.
